The symptoms are those of a persistently high temperature, nasal congestion, cough, muscle aches and generally feeling very grotty. Less common symptoms are those of nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort.

The main advice is that of prevention. You will have noticed a campaign regarding hand washing, keeping yourself and tissues to yourself and not mixing in public places. This is all really good advice.

From a medical point of view, medication is usually of no benefit. Symptomatic treatment consists of remaining well hydrated, regular paracetamol and/or ibuprofen appropriate to age group, and really to take it easy. Be guided by what your body tells you it can do. Antibiotics are of no benefit at all and can even make you feel worse.

However, if you are in a high risk group of people eg: >65 years, those with a chronic disease, < 5years of age and pregnant women and present with symptoms of less than 48hour duration sometimes antiviral medication can be of benefit.
